Removing wrinkles becomes an easy task with this invention

« ABCpedia HOME

The steam iron is just one of the several types of irons we find in the market today; in general, people consider it the most effective at the time of removing or smoothing wrinkles from washed clothes. The steam iron is a device that has as an aim to remover wrinkles by using steam and heat. The steam iron works by loosening the bonds between the fibres of different material and the long chain polymer molecules. While the molecules remain hot, they fibres are straightened by the weight of the steam iron holding their new shape when they cool out. The steam iron is prefect for clothes such us cotton, since to iron this type of material, we need the addition of water to loosen the intermolecular bronds. Many modern clothes, developed during the twentieth century, are supposed to require little or no ironing since the material that was used to design them is anti wrinkle. Before reaching the actual steam iron we must tell the story if the traditional iron, the beginning of this device took place in China in where metal pans filled with charcoal were used for different factories in that country with the aim of smoothing clothes during the 1st Century B. C. Later, in during the 17th Century, the material called sad iron (solid iron) began to be considered to remove wrinkles, this concerns of thick slabs made of cast iron, with a delta shape and a handle, this worked with the use of fire.

The following design consisted of an iron box that could be filled with extreme hot coals, this type of iron was sold in USA at the beginning of 1902 but we’re still very far away from the stem iron yet. By the beginning of twentieth Century, we could see many irons that worked with the help of fuel such us kerosene, whale oil, alcohol, carbide gas, natural gas and even with gasoline. Some of the houses by that time were equipped with several pipe systems with the aim of distribute natural gas or carbide gas to all the rooms; this also helped the appliances operation such us irons and lights. Although the risk of fire was considerable, liquid-fuel irons were sold in USA, specially in rural areas during the Second World War.

Nowadays, in the industrialized world, many iron designs came up, first were the electric irons, these ones use the heating that is provided by an electric current, and in this group of electric irons we find the steam iron. The hot plate, named sole plate, of the ancient irons is not made of iron anymore, not the steam irons plates are made of aluminium or stainless steel; a thermostat is in charge of controlling the heating element. This thermostat switches the current on and off to keep the selected accurate temperature. The resistively heated electric iron, was created by Henry W. Seeley in 1882, this invention opened doors to new technologies and models improving the irons till we reach the model of steam iron.

Steam irons specifications

The steam iron is not only a device that remove wrinkles, that would not mark a difference from the other types of irons, the steam iron works with electricity, which provides it heat, but also with steam and is the steam that makes easier the task of removing wrinkles, and leaves the clothes smoother. Modern irons, at present, are classified into automatic and non automatic irons and have several features (as many features they have, the more expensive they’ll be). The main characteristic of the steam irons is their ejection of steam through the clothes during the ironing process, the iron also has an indicator that shows the amount of water left in the reservoir. The steam iron also includes a practical method for setting the iron down, in general in its vertically/ end, that can be considered a kind of injury ensure, since it avoids the contact between us and the hot part. The steam iron also has a dial control that shows a range of possible temperatures that we must use in different types of clothing: cotton, wool, silk, linen, etc. It is also provide with a system that constantly sends steam through the hot part of the iron into the clothes. Some steam iron counts with a steam burst feature which sends a burst of steam through the clothes when the person presses the accurate button. These are some of several features or applications that a steam iron has, we can find them in many goods stores; some commercial irons includes a boiler unit which is separated from the handheld iron. Some others count with a heating element and a pedal-operated vacuum in order to pull are through the board of the iron and dry the garment.
