Ernesto Che Guevara in Cuba

By the time he was only a child, Ernestito started suffering from asthma, which made him live his childhood in Alta Gracia, Córdoba, place that would leave a mark in his life. Sharing his days of poverty with his friends and the abuse of their parents by business men, who exploited them, during his childhood, would be an unforgettable experience for him. At the age of five, in Córdoba, he used to write and started exploring the classic adventure novels. His basic education was given to him in his house by his mother. He attended to Deán Funes National School during high school, in the northen province. Little by little he became a follower of Marx and Engels; the relativismo físico Einsteiniano and the relativismo moral of Freud built his personality. He’s not accepted in the army because of his health background. He worked as a nurse in commercial ships, and in oil tankers, from that moment on he started traveling around Latinoamerica. At the age of 19, with Peronismo and the Spanish civil war as context, he enrolled himself in University of Buenos Aires, where he got his doctor degree, with dermatology orientation in 1953, six years later. His studies were inspired by his own disease; he was interested in diseases such us leprosy.
During that period he mixed his books with his trips; a few days after enrolling himself in University, he made a bike trip along the north of Argentina, and in 1951 he made another one similar in his Norton 500 cm3 along the south of Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela and Miami, visiting the leprosy house of San Pablo, Brasil. This trip has been documented in his personal writings, inspiring the famous film “Motorbike diaries”.

Something inside him was touched by other people’s suffer, with an American reality which alerted his deepest emotions.

The beginning of a legend

As soon as he got his degree, he left for the legends path; visiting Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Panamá, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Guatemala. The ideas of Marx and Lennin were already deep inside his head. In Guatemala he met Hilda Gadea, young Marx follower, who he would marry and have a daughter, and who united him and Nico López, Fidel Castro’s partner.
At the age of 26 he got a job as a doctor in General Hospital from Mexico, where he met Castros brothers, Raúl and Fidel; discovering the man who could lead by his communist theories and channel his revolutionary energy (he already showed firmly his theory of using guns as means to get success in any revolutionary movement).
He joined Fidel in the guerilla trainings organized by Cuban groups in Mexico, under the orders of Alberto Bayo, Captain of the Republican Spanish Army. There is baptized as Che, because of his argentinian way of speaking. He’s taken prisoner with the rest of the group because of conspiracy to overthrow Batista, but then was released by the president Cárdenas.

He also traveled to Congo, met Kinshasa and helped at least one hundred Cubans (the base) to free theirselves from the Belgian oppression. The mission lasted seven month with negative results. Quitting everything in Cuba, left for Bolivia using the name Adolfo M. Gonzalez and a passport from Uruguay. He went into the guerilla to help the villagers against their military government. He’s take prisoner and killed in October 9th of 1967.
His body remains in Santa Clara, Cuba.

Final thought about Che Guevara

The historical review tries to dirt the figure of this man; perhaps, somewhere, it might be right. But the most important thing is that where the imperialism, oppression, exploitation of men by men remain, all that would only encourage the name of Che Guevara, whose look  seems to vanish in a fight for justice and equity.
