Sales market research is everywhere: we find people who try to get information from us in order to build, design or elaborate goods that we’re supposed to buy; but that was a fairly simple definition of sales market research. If we want to know exactly what sales market research consists of, there are many facts we must consider. We’re living in a commercial world in where everything is sold and bought all the time, but how do we know what people need to buy?, which are their main needs in the goods market?; are the provided services good enough or should be improved?; these are some of the question inside the sales market research. Sales market research is just a technique of collecting information which makes the businessmen more aware of what people need to buy; knowing this, they’ll be able to design or elaborate that item to be sold in the market. |
Sales market research is, perhaps, the most important activity in business since it gives us the accurate information about how people think, feel and need; the elaboration process of every factory is important, as the work of their employees and the marketing process. But SMR is crucial; we must know what people want first in order to build it; we must be aware if the service we’re giving is satisfactory or if it’s deficient, etc. SMR include the study of the whole public: kids, teenagers, adults and old people; and also facts such us: where our product is needed, who would like to buy them (is a product aimed for teenagers, mothers, men, etc), what age are the people who are supposed to buy my products; in case we want to modify our products, how much it would affect our sales. Sales market research is also related with marketing, since marketing is deeply related to sales and publicity.

This market research is carried away by experts who have experience on selling goods, they will tell us how our product or services might be sold, in this specific case we involve predictions. When we design a product, we think of how good it’ll be sold, but sometimes we are not capable enough to do it, that’s why we hire an expert to do a sales market research, after a period of studying the environment, our employee will come with results that could fulfil or not our expectations. To elaborate a product or a service we also need to know how much demand we have, otherwise we would be spending sources, money and time without knowing if the production will be enough or if we’ll need to elaborate more. This is a very common problem among small companies, they don’t perform a SMR since, as they are so small, they believe that a certain number of items will please people. But most of the times they produce more products that they will sell in the market without knowing that fact, which later leads them to lose a big amount of their investment.

Sales Market research methods
There are many ways to know what people want and how they want it, sales market research surveys are very popular and used by many companies around the world; surveys are the way to know what people really want and what are they needing. But there are many types of surveys: by mail, by phones, street surveys, etc. The most common survey in the sales market research is the phone survey; here is where a man or woman calls us from a call center asking certain things about a product or service; in general the questions here are involved with our needs: are we happy with the given service?, would we change anything?, is the attention of their employees good/very good or excellent?, etc. Then we have the streets and the mailing surveys, the first one is more personal and most of the times it consists of many questions but at the end of the survey the company gives us a small present thanking us for “our help and time”. But the mail survey consists of many questions that could be answered or not, it consists of a word document full of questions; the sales market research surveys may have different methods of interviewing people but the questions are the same in each of the; they only have one aim, be aware of what people want, how and when. |
