For many people engraving is an art, for some others is just a beautiful technique we use to decorate objects, no matter what we think, this activity has increased in a huge way around the world that even today a little boy can perform extraordinary images by using it. But to perform engraving we need to use specific tools in order to achieve the shape we desire without running the risk of damaging the object. We can define this process as a technique which has the aim of incising a mark or design with an engraving pen or tool onto a certain metal such us steel, copper, zinc or in some cases, even plastic. We mentioned before one of the main tools that we use during this procedure: the engraving pen; we can find thousand of them in the market with several different applications; but these pens are not the only tools we use at the time to engrave an object or surface. We also count with gravers; they are conic elements with one cutting edge perfect to engrave soft materials such us plastic or wood.

Pens used to engrave are more evolved than old tools, most of them require batteries or electricity to work, and they are very useful at the time of engraving hard surfaces such us metal; some models are not recommended for wood since their power is so strong it could break the piece. The old engraving equipments and tools are pushed into metal plate to produce the design of the marking and the following cuts; each tool can reach a certain depth, the deeper it penetrates the wider the line becomes. There is a close relationship between the depth and the engraving width; it is determined by the angle located on the top of the tool. The engraving pen leaves a unique quality of mark that has as main characteristics its steadiness, clean edges and a wonderful appearance; the other tools also produce a beautiful engraving image, leaving a recognizable mark. Old tools are manufactured in various models and shapes: flat and round gravers, flat bottomed tool, etc. In case we would like to have our own personal engraver, we can assist to a professional engraving store and ask for some advice to design our own engraving tool or pen.

As we stated before, nowadays we find many models of engraving pens, some of them work very easily and some others are a bit more complex, this is the case of laser engraving pens which utilities are very useful but its applications could turn a bit complicated if we don’t have enough knowledge. Here the engraving procedure is the same with the difference we won’t be using a conventional tool, but a laser; the main advantage of this device is the time we gain since the laser is more effective than the cuttings of any other tools. We can engrave a name on a metal in only 5 minutes; meanwhile it would take us 30 minutes to engrave only half of that name with a conventional tool. Although we get the benefit of the time here, we must be aware that these lasers might be dangerous and that’s why we need to be much focused while we use it; it is also very clean and does not involve tool bits which contact the engraving surface and wear out.

Applications

An engraving pen has a very particular application and is to engrave our valuables or to mark our property; most of the pens that have been sold last year were designed to engrave small objects such us equipments, jewellery, stereos, etc. When we mark our property we are, in a way, assuring them from burglars, and in case they are robbed and the police find them, they’ll be returned to us immediately. Many people wonder how to engrave their valuable objects, well this task is easy, the first step we must follow concerns the police and the tool; we must purchase an engraving pen from a police station by introducing our identification (it might be our driver license) and explain we need the engraving tool in order to mark our possessions; in case we decide to buy the tool somewhere else we won’t need identification documents. Then, we must create an inventory of our personal belongings, after taking them down in a sheet of paper we’ll start marking them one by one. We recommend that the mark we do on object surface be personal (a code or an ID number); in this way in case of suffering a robbery, we will have more chances to recover our belongings. As we can notice, engraving pens are not only accurate to design drawings or images; they are also very useful at the time of protecting our property.
