Sandblasting

Cleaning and polishing through a burst of sand

« ABCpedia HOME

Whenever it comes to clean up difficult surfaces we try to find products that could eliminate every type of dirt, but sometimes what those surfaces manifest go beyond dirt and the traditional clean up methods don’t work as good as we think. As time went by, industry invented a very practical clean up method called sandblasting. Sandblasting is a term used for removing fine bits of material in a great speed in order to clean a surface. This method is called "sandblasting" since sand is what we use here to clean, but in fact we can repeat this process by using other uniform particles. Sandblasting is so effective and practical that can be also used in synthetic beads to remove the waste of coconut shell.

Applications

The sand blasting system is composed by three parts: a workstation used to hold the piece of glass, the abrasive, which consists of an air compressor and a blaster gun. The workstation is also used to clean small objects. But this technique, in the cleaning world, has two different applications: one is to carve designs or words into the glass, wood, or flexible materials, and the other is to clean up a surface or remove sticky dirt from it. Sandblasting is also used as a very helpful technique to decorate many things; especially when it comes to glass decoration, although glass can also be treated or decorated by our hands as well, with the use of a sandblasting system we gain more time and the procedure turns less expensive. This method can be used in glass with two different applications: for carving and etching. When we do the glass etching, the abrasive that this apparatus contains is poured at the glass very softly in order to get a darker color, this effect got from this technique is used by many people to produce images and words. We can also obtain, from this process, different types of shapes that could be similar to works of art, we achieve this by adjusting the speed of the machine and changing the angle from where we are pouring the abrasive. The carving method is very simple as well, the glass gets carved by the sandblasting procedure performed on its surface, and whenever we perform this type of activity we need a stencil that protects the parts of the glass we don’t need to carve. Sandblasting is a great technique to do any type of carving work; we obtain different angles of cuts and depths, getting lightning effects that could be very impressive.

Cleaning with sand

Sandblasting is also considered a cleaning method, and its use comes from years ago and couldn’t been challenged by any other cleaning machine technique; in fact, the first time this apparatus was used to clean a surface, it was in order to remove paint or sealant. Years ago, panting was very difficult to remove and we couldn’t find many machines that could help us with the task, with the apparition of the sandblasting method, today, removing two layers of paint is almost piece of cake. We can achieve this by adding small quantities of abrasive on the surface in high-velocity, by this procedure the imperfection on the surface are soften which leads us to wash them off easily; obtaining at the same time, a smooth surface where to put the new paint layer on. But sandblasting is not a method used only in houses or apartments; it is widely known when it comes to hulls and ships or large structures, is a very versatile method.

Sandblasting equipments

The cost of this machine will depend on what we are going to use it, and on the projects we intend to satisfy; a domestic sandblasting machine will be less expensive than an industrial machine. A small home sandblasting machine for carving glass costs around US$800; meanwhile a professional or artistic sandblasting machine can be over US$3.000. The industrial sandblasting equipments have even a higher cost (US$6.000) since they are more resistant and are designed to perform great scale projects for carving and cleaning.
