In the last 15 years inflated plastic balls --also known as Swiss balls or gym balls-- have become a big sensation among those who love to perform complete body exercises. The Swiss ball exercise consists of working out almost each part of our body: specially abdominals, chest, spine and legs. Believe it or not, the Swiss ball is highly recommended in many phyisotherapy clinics since they are considered a healthy instrument that help people to treat physical disorders. But there is a question that has been around this inflate ball, Can we justify its popularity?, is it as effective as people and some doctors say?, In the last year many experts have developed thousands of "the truth about the Swiss ball exercise" just to help us to solve the issue: "a real solution for our muscles problems or just a fashionable way to work out our body". And to perform a Swiss ball exercise we need to buy a Swiss ball first: this is a ball made of elastic rubber with a diameter of 54 to 84 cm depending on the size of the ball. This Swiss ball is known as well by several names: gym ball, pilates ball, fitness ball or sports ball.

According to many reports, the primary benefit that the individual get when they perform Swiss ball exercises is  that the body responds immediately to the instability that the ball has with the aim of remaining balanced; in this way the body works out several muscles. After a few days of performing Swiss ball exercises we can  notice that our muscles are getting stronger, specially the core body muscles (abdominals and back); This ball is used as well in fitness programs to help people to adopt he right posture of their column.
When we perform Swiss ball exercises, we'll have to solve a wide range of difficulty levels; each of them requires of back support and strength from the stomach muscles, these activities will help us to firm up the trunk muscles in our body.
As we said before the Swiss ball exercises are included in physical therapy for people who suffered from low back pain, as example we can name at least 6  benefits we can get from this gym activity: the improve of proprioception, the increase of the lower back movility, we reach a better stability and balance, the entire control of the corde body muscles, the increase of the back and abdominal strength and the right posture that our body must have.

Although we see here that the Swiss ball exercises can give us many physical benefits there are some coaches or trainers that criticises this method saying that this kind of gym activity can lead to injury; some others affirm that although a Swiss ball exercise could help us to eliminate body aches, they are not as effective as people think. The exercises we perform with a Swiss ball are traditional strength exercises but the amount of eight we lift in a shoulder press exercise on a Swiss ball is much less than on a bench; this is better for our body since we don't overwork our muscles by lifting heavy equipments. When the Swiss ball exercise are made in a lying position on the ball of course, here our leg muscles are quite active and provide the stabilising function we're trying to achieve, in order to control the ball which is moving under the spine. The conclusion we can reach about the Swiss ball is that we need yet more research or information to establish the full range of benefits and limitations that this technique has; meanwhile, we can only assume that this workout exercise only help us to eliminate physical disturbances but not to keep a good shape as we do with the traditional methods. So if we want to lose weight and improve our shape, we recommend to assist to the gym, get an exercise routine and get to work; but on the other hand, if what we need is just to correct body postures and eliminate column or spine problems, the Swiss ball exercises are highly recommended.



We can also find this technique in many gyms, today the use of the Swiss ball has increased in a way we can’t even imagine; every gym has a Swiss ball program since, nowadays not all the people go to the gym to keep their body in shape, they are also trying to find new relaxing exercises to improve certain positions of their bodies or just to relax from an stressing day. The Swiss ball exercises are great for those who are more interested in body heath than in loosing weight, most of the people who practise these types of exercises are people around 40 yeas old; this method is not advisable for teenagers or kids, since they would probably get bored due to they are used to performing activities like martial arts, soccer, basketball, dancing, etc.
