Human Papilloma virus: description, clinic, warts, effects and treatment.

The HPV or human papilloma viruses are spread all over the nation, they are related to skin and tissue tumors production (generally known as warts). These viruses have been associated to diseases like malignant tumors in the genital area.
Although the HPV have been found in other vertebrates, this virus is quite specific in each specie which makes the transmission from one specie to another almost impossible.
During history, warts were related to some infectious substance or factor, since one of them was capable of producing another wart if a human being got infected with it. The first reference of this virus was made in 1907.

* The viruses that are part of this family are called PAPILLOMAVIRIDAE,
and their structure lack of cover and have a double chain of DNA inside.

Effects and prevalence

We still don’t fully understand the way this virus is spread, the effects it causes and the way it should be controlled, except for cases associated to infections in women genital area. That is why there are no lab diagnosis methods (at least not economic ones), the diagnosis and study of its prevalence is based on its clinic characteristics.

There are three types of skin infections caused by the human papilloma virus:

  • Ordinary warts represent 71% of all the warts we have in our skin, they are more often seen in children. The warts that are located at the sole of the feet are more common in teenagers and represent 34% of the warts.
  • Flat warts represent 4% of warts and they are also very common in little children.

The HPV causes anomaly in the scaly cells of woman cervix (nape of the neck). This type of cells are the ones which are found when the medical check known as papanicolau (or PAP – study of the cells located in the cervix-) is done.

HPV tipes Associated diseases
HPV 6 and 11 Low grade tumors
HPV 16 and 18 High grade tumors
HPV 16 and 18 Cervical cancer
HPV 1 and 2 Ordinary warts
HPV 6, 11 and 16 Conjunctival warts

Relationship between Human papilloma virus and cancer

Some reports have shown that more of 93% of genital cancer cases (cervix one or the ones located at the nape of the neck) contain HPV DNA, specially HPV 16, 18 and 33. That’s why there is a strong relationship between the HPV and cancer production, anyway it’s known that the presence of this virus not always causes a malignant tumor.

Human papilloma virus treatment

We still do not have appropriate treatments for the anal-genital warts, but there are some methods that could destroy them like surgery, or other technique known as LEEP, ice-surgery that consists in destructing the warts by using chemical products among others.
